FM Global Senior Cargo Production Underwriter in Parsippany, New Jersey

FM Global Cargo is a business unit within the FM Global Group dedicated to supporting clients of FM Global by insuring their property in motion, helping to build resilience into their supply chain. We are looking for a Senior Cargo Production Underwriter to join our team.


The Senior Cargo Production Underwriter is accountable for maintaining and developing a profitable portfolio of Cargo business in an assigned territory. This is consistent with Corporate/FM Global Cargo policies, business strategies, underwriting guidelines and objectives.

The person in this position is responsible for prospecting and underwriting of new cargo business and underwriting/servicing of existing accounts including large complex and global risks to an assigned underwriting authority. Also, the development and implementation of business strategies designed to achieve defined business objectives for the specified territory. They will act as the primary contact for clients, brokers and internal partners on all matters pertaining to the cargo programs within their assigned territories. They will also act as a “team leader” interacting frequently with Cargo risk Engineers, Cargo Account Coordinators, and Claims personnel for their respective book of business.

The highly specialized nature of cargo insurance requires the position to have expert knowledge of international trade and associated terminology. As well as world geography, multimodal transportation, logistics, the international business environment, cargo insurance market practice, law and regulation. A Cargo Production Underwriter must expertly analyze risk information to provide cargo insurance and risk engineering programs tailored specifically to each client’s needs.

What You’ll Do:

Expertly promote and market FM Global Cargo capabilities, products and risk engineering services. This is on a direct and brokered basis in an assigned territory to ensure a steady stream of desirable new business.

Actively develop and grow a profitable portfolio of large/complex cargo business in an assigned region. This will entail the skilled application of sound underwriting principles, superior technical proficiency, and extensive knowledge of international trade and logistics. Including, the creative use of underwriting and risk engineering resources to effectively analyze and select risk.

Successfully retain an existing book of business consisting cargo insurance programs that vary in size and complexity. This is through a professional understanding of risk and Clients’ exposures and our ability to deliver innovative underwriting and cargo loss control / risk engineering solutions that add new value to our client’s business.

Provide outstanding and responsive service both directly to our clients, property client service team members and to our brokers that clearly uses our strengths as a competitive differential in the specialized marine cargo marketplace.

Represent FM Global Cargo in the marketplace as an “insurer of choice”. This is by consistently acting as an experienced, professional, cargo insurance specialist with extensive knowledge of international trade, logistics, legal, economic and political environment.

Participate in various special projects that are designed to enhance the client experience and improve our internal processes to achieve corporate objectives.


  • Bachelors degree or equivalent; MBA or AMIM and/or CPCU desirable

  • 5 years ocean marine industry experience (insurance company/broker). Or, 3 Years FM Global underwriting experience.

  • Strong sense of personal accountability

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Knowledgeable about all aspects of this highly specialized line of business including:

  • Risk identification and assessment

  • Marine cargo insurance coverage, forms, underwriting techniques

  • International trade including OFAC restrictions and admitted local policy requirements

  • Maritime law

  • Logistics together with company standards and procedures, financial statements.

  • Skilled in sales

  • Organizational and planning skills

  • A proven track record in establishing and maintaining strategic relationships directly with Clients as well as with a strong network of supportive marine producers and industry contacts

  • Able to work independently as well as within a small team environment

  • Willingness to contribute ideas for the improvement of the team and organization

  • Desire to learn and continue self-improvement, as well as share lessons learned with others
